WHEN THE TOOTHLESS TIGER ROARS

In the last few weeks Mumbai was the centre of all the political action. It all started when ShahRukh Khan criticized the IPL for not handling the Pakistani cricketers issue in a proper fashion. This gave Shiv Sena the golden opportunity to start a series of attacks on the actor. This was followed by a bigger thriller- The Rahul Gandhi visit to Mumbai. Shiv Sena had threatened that they won’t let Rahul Gandhi step in Mumbai as he had advocated the idea of ‘India for all’ and ‘Mumbai for all’. The protagonist for all the above cotroversies was none other than Bal Thackeray.

Just to get a sense of Bal Thackeray’s brand of politics, it is important to know how it all began. Thackarey began his career as a talented cartoonist with the Free Press Journal newspaper in the 1950’s. But the ‘politician’ Bal Thackarey was born a decade later in the 60’s. Not surprisingly, it was the Congress that gave Thackarey a free hand to tighten his grip on Mumbai based industrial unions as the CPM influence was growing during the same period. This was done with the intention to safe guard the Congress bastion. Thackarey was leading an anti-migrant campiagn even then. The only difference was that it was against the South Indian & Gujaratis. Thackarey’s claim was that Bombay belonged to Marathis and jobs should be reserved for Marathis not the ‘migrants’.

Thackarey’s main problem is that his outlook & issues have never been consistant. In his four decade political career he has changed his political issues from time to time. After dropping the anti South Indian-Gujarati issue in the 70’s, he shifted his focus on the anti-muslim issue. And as that issue lost steam over the years, he got back to the anti-migrant issue but this time it was against the migrants from U.P & Bihar. Not to forget that some of the other highlights of Shiv Sena have been campaigns against western culture, especially against Valentines Day.

The only consistency that Thackarey has displayed in the four decades while spearheading these issues, are the tools for communication he has used to convey his message. And these tools are- violence, vandalism, hate speeches, vitriolic articles, threats, provocations etc. Thackarey is a staunch believer of hate politics. Many termed him as the ‘remote control’ of Bombay in the 90’s. This was the time when the Shiv Sena was not in power. The Shiv Sainiks never wasted an opportunity when it came to violence. The political class, bollywood, corporate India all shivered in front of him and no one dared to go against his wishes. The question of right and wrong never existed. Thackarey had just one message for everyone- that Mumbai, erstwhile Bombay was Thackarey’s jungle and he was the king.

But a lot has changed over the years. It took Thackarey 30 years from the time of Shiv Sena’s formation in 1966 to capture power. And it took just 5 years to let go of it forever. Even when the Shiv Sena was in power, the party really never did anything significant to uplift the Marathis. Thackarey has never had a real vision, even not for the Marathis. Reservation of jobs for Marathis is hardly a solution. And the kind of jobs which Thackarey is now demanding to be reserved are jobs like that of taxi drivers which in any case not many Marathis are willing to take up.

Even Thackarey’s son Uddav, has proved to be a complete failure. Though he did try to get away with the violent political practices, but with the party failing continuously over the last few years, he has also cracked under pressure. Taking a leaf out of his cousin Raj Thackrey’s book, he too has adopted the same course which his father did 40 years back.

Rahul Gandhi in a matter of four hours made the Shiv Sena realize that their argument has no support. It is about connecting with people. It is true that there was an army of policemen protecting Rahul during his visit, but Rahul in 4 hours was able to strike a chord with the Mumbaikars. By travelling in a local train or going to schools & colleges to interact with youngsters, Rahul connected with all Mumbaikars irrespective of the region or state or religion they belonged to. That is what Thackeray failed to realize over the years. What Rahul did in 4 hours, Thackarey has never been able to do in 4 decades. It’s about feeling the pulse of the people and responding to those aspirations.

So on one hand when icons like Sachin, Shahrukh, Mukesh Ambani talk about 'One India', Thackarey pounces on them forgetting that these people have truly contributed to India unlike Thackarey. Unfortunately we need more of Rahuls to make the Thackareys realize that his brand of politics is over and done with. We need a Mumbaikar Rahul to make him realize that.Unfortunately the likes of Pawar, Chavan and bollywood have made Thackarey live on the myth that he is still the tiger who can control the jungle (Mumbai) by roaring from his den. But someone needs to make him realize that he is now a toothless tiger and the jungle belongs to the lion now. And the lion is none other then the common ‘Mumbaikar’.

THE AMAR STORY IS NOT OVER YET!

A few days back a senior political journalist described Amar Singh as the king of television ‘sound bytes’ for his punch comments (statements given on television cameras) with the distinct potential of delivering political maneouvers with same force. The expulsion of Amar Singh from the Samajwadi party does not come as a surprise given the sequence of events that transpired between him and the party over the last few weeks. But the big question on everyone’s mind is –what next? Is this the end of Amar Singh?

Many in the media and political circles believe this is the end of Amar Singh. But my answer is ‘no’. As mentioned earlier he has been the media’s favourite for his blunt

sound bytes. But Amar Singh has done much more then just giving colorful dialogues to news reporters. He is someone who has bridged the divide between corporate India & politics. Though businessmen & politicians always co-existed and worked together but never before were they so candid in displaying their connection in public life. Anil Ambani, Suburato Roy rubbing shoulders with Mulayam Singh and other politicians in public glare was unveiled only when Amar emerged on the scene. He was also instrumental in adding the bollywood glamour to the socialist, cadre based party.

Amar Singh was the key reason behind the huge funding the Samjwadi party received over the years. He was the main fund raiser for the party. When Amar joined the party 14 years back Mulayam had no clue how to draw big personalities into their fold.

Another unique attribute about Amar is that he has the reputation of being a star ‘fixer’ or ‘dealer’ with the potential to negotiate and strike any political deal. When the BSP-BJP alliance collapsed in Uttar Pradesh in 2003, Amar was instrumental in poaching rebel BSP candidates which helped Mulayam Singh become the chief minister of the state for the third time.

But the mother of all deals was the one in 2008 when the Samajwadi party extended outside support to the Congress for the trust vote on the nuclear deal. Had it not been for Amar Singh, there is a possibility that Manmohan Singh’s dream to implement the US-Indo deal would have been left half way.

For Mulayam Singh being out of power both at the centre and the state has compelled him to take desperate measures. With his family now running party like family business, Mulayam has send the message loud and clear that as long as one falls in line with his family members they are welcome.

But what next for Amar Singh? Many say that he is cozying up to Maywati and the Congress to get a political haven. Amar does not have much of a choice…but if he joins the Congress it will be a win-win situation for both as far as UP is concern. Even though Amar is not a mass leader but still along with the Congress he can work towards weakening the Samajwadi party vote bank. Having been in the party for one and half decade he can play a major role in attacking the Samajwadi Party on their weak areas.

For the Congress, the weaker the Samajwadi gets the more it gains as this would lead to a two party competition in UP, with Mayawati’s BSP the only other competitor. But many second rung leaders in the Congress wouldn’t like to see Amar Singh in the party as he would be a threat for them. Unless the Congress is very clear in limiting his role only till UP.

Another choice for him would be join a smaller party like the NCP which does not have a base in North India. But that would not offer him much political clout as he enjoyed in the Samajwadi. Though he may have a much stronger voice in a smaller party compared to what he may enjoy in the Congress.

Another important factor Amar has to bear in mind is the interest of close family friends like the Bachchans and Anil Ambani. The Gandhi family and Bachchans don’t get along, ruling out any support for them even from the Congress even if Amar joins the party. Similarly, Congress is known to be closer to Mukesh Ambani which is not good news for Anil Ambani.

Amar Singh has a tough task ahead. Many would say that the Samajwadi party will move on but Amar Singh won’t. But the fact is that Amar Singh was the face of Samajwadi at the centre and there is no one who can fill his place. Life for Samajwadi will definitely be not easy going ahead. And as far as Amar is concern, the king of ‘sound bytes’ will bounce back sooner than later. The Amar political story is not over yet!!

CRICKET: THE TOOL FOR DIPLOMATIC WAR

The IPL auction which saw absolutely no bidding for Pakistani players has left the whole of Pakistan fuming & has lead to a diplomatic war between the two sides….Lalit Modi in his defense kept stating that ‘performance’ & ‘availability’ were the criteria based on which the franchises selected the players…

Mr Modi did not do his homework as he forgot that Pakistan are the T20 champions and out of the eleven Pakistani players put for auction most of the players were part of the winning team. And as far as availability is concerned…Pakistan has no tour lined up for March & April when the IPL is scheduled to take place…So this theory stands no ground. It could probably be a sort of a

pay-back time for the government to send a message to Modi to not get into a direct confrontation with the government as he did last year. The sad fact of the matter is that Modi is becoming bigger than the event…And this is a peril for IPL

The franchise haven’t come out in the open with a vivid explanation for the non-inclusion of Pakistani players in their teams but some of them have referred the unanimous decision to ‘security issues’ which they won’t be able to provide nor is the government ready to guarantee for any players. But home minister P.Chidambaram’s comment that the non-selection of Pakistani players was a ‘disservice’ to cricket has punched a big hole in the explanation given by the franchises.

The IPL fiasco has united the political fraternity, cricketers & the people of Pakistan. This move has given the government of Pakistan the much needed ammunition to attack the Indian government. The saddest aspect of the whole event is that the people across the border have perceived as political decision with the backing of the Indian people. Though the Indian media & the Indian cricket fraternity has condemned the whole event...

Lalit Modi handled this situation in a very abysmal manner. Ideally, the IPL along with all the franchises should have issued a statement to the Pakistan cricket board before the auction itself that they won’t be able to include the players in the auction as the franchises won’t be able to provide security for the players. Altleast by doing this the dignity of the players would have remained intact. No doubt that some clamor would have been raised by the Pakistan cricket board or even the government but atleast the players would not have felt humiliated.

Another loser is IPL the tournament itself. The fact that IPL projects itself is a fusion of cultures where there are no political boundaries, racial divide or religious conflicts have been contradicted by this very event. History is a testimony that cricket has played a pivotal role in bringing both the nations together. Whether it was the standing ovation for the Pakistan team after it beat India in Chennai in 1999 or the stupendous welcome for the Indian team when it visited Pakistan in 2004. IPL had the golden chance to recreate that magic but alas! They have dropped it… Even art & culture has been instrumental in bridging the divide. Bollywood movies and actors are a rage in Pakistan while Pakistani singers are admired by Indians…Art, culture and especially cricket have bolstered the warmth & affection between the citizens of both countries.

But if we start using them as tools for fighting a diplomatic war then the situation will deteriorate even more. And this is exactly what the terror groups in Pakistan & the rightist groups in India want. They want to create a situation where even people to people link breaks and creates more acrimony between the two sides.

The only silver lining is the stand taken by the Indian government which at least by condemning the handling of the whole issue has send the message that it is fighting a war against terrorists operating out of Pakistan not the people or cricketers of Pakistan…It’s high time that the likes of Modi look beyond commercial interest as that will enhance the reputation of Indian cricket & the sport itself….

IPL 3 might go on raking big bucks and once the TRP’s kick in the whole episode would be forgotten but no global cricket tournament is complete with out the representation of all the cricketing giants…The IPL sheen would be missing this time around thanks to the absence of Pakistani players…

THE LOST TRACK: SPORTS IN INDIA

Sports in India have been one of the most neglected areas in the last 62 years. Though the country has made rapid economic progress which has put India on the global platform but if there is one significant area where India is lagging behind compared to the big powers of the world then sports is one major area.

Two major sports controversies made headlines in the last few days for all the wrong reasons. Indian hockey players went on strike due to non payment of compensation and Abhinav Bindra not been selected to represent India in the upcoming ‘Commonwealth Games’.

The hockey players issue reflects the sad state of affairs of our national sport. On the one hand cash rich BCCI has been growing richer thanks to the invention of 20-20 format and on the other Hockey federation of India does not have money to even pay its national players. Let’s not forget that hockey has won India much more laurels than any other sport. Indian hockey has won the Olympic gold medal 8 times, silver medal once and the bronze twice. The team has been unbeaten at the Olympics from 1928 to 1956 winning the gold medal six times in a row. India has won the hockey world cup once and is one of the four teams to have won the world cup.

Abhinav Bindra, the only Indian to have won the gold medal in the history of Olympics not been selected for the commonwealth games has left everyone startled. The reason given by NRAI (National Rifles association of India) is that Bindra did not turn up for the trials. Bindra’s clarification is that he did turn up but the association & the ministry postponed the date. Bindra all this while was training in Europe for the event. But the most absurd point in all this is that the association is not ready to consider Bindra’s international performances in the last few months. By any logic the international events are much more competitive & the participation standards are much higher.

These two events are just the tip of the iceberg. Indian sports need a serious makeover not only in terms of nurturing talent but also a major restructuring of the whole system is the need of the hour. The sports ministry has been the biggest failure to start with. Whether it was the hockey fiasco or the recent Bindra controversy, the ministry has failed to diffuse the situation. Only a few months back India’s athletic legend, PT Usha was reduced to tears by the kind of beheviour that was metted out to her by the ministry when it came to arrangements for her stay in Madhya Pradesh. Not far behind is the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) which has constantly failed to infuse any sort of encouragement among Olympic athletes. The IOA which is also responsible for organizing the Delhi commonwealth games is already receiving flak from the international Olympic committee for the sloppy preparation progress made so far.

Actually in this scenario the government should take a leaf out of the BCCI model. BCCI is the only sporting body which is not government controlled and is autonomous. Not surprisingly it is also the most successful in terms of financial independence and managing the sport. The Sports ministry should dissolve all the government appointed sport associations. In most of these associations’ members and their office bearers end up holding the post for decades with out any changes. E.g. Suresh Kalmadi has been the president of the IOA for last 14 years. He is in his 4th term which ends in 2012. In all probability he is expected to get another term in 2012. The administrators have to be made accountable and for that the sports ministry should redraft the constitution. A limit should be set as far as the number of terms a person can hold in the general body. This will ensure that the office bearers also change with time. All the sport bodies should be made autonomous with the sports ministry giving them infrastructure assistance & financial backing. Initially there might be issues in raising funds but with time and better administration it shouldn’t be highly difficult for various sports to draw sponsors given the rising interest of people in sports other then cricket. All bodies would be overviewed by the sports ministry minus interference in the administration. The Sports ministry should have ‘special powers’ to intervene in extraordinary circumstances.

Sport is an essential part of any society, especially for a nation that’s on its way to become a superpower. All round development is incomplete without success in multiple sport disciplines. The government should give this sector a lot of significance as India’s glory would be incomplete without success in the world of sports’. One billion plus population and only one individual Olympic medal is a complete injustice to the potential this nation possesses!!!
